The UMC Women’s Soccer team avoided another NSIS loss on Sunday, but it wasn’t a win, as they played to a scoreless tie against the Northern State Wolves in a windy match at UMC.
FIRST HALF
Both teams had a lot of trouble coping with the heavy winds and rain, and neither team got a shot off for the first 15 minutes of the game. The first shot came from the Wolves; in fact, they took the first 3 shots of the game, but all of them missed the net. UMC did not get a shot on goal in the first half, but Payton King stepped up in net, recording three saves, her first coming all the way in the 31st minute. The Wolves had 5 corners in the half, but they all amounted to nothing, and the match stayed scoreless at the half.
SECOND HALF
The rain died down in the second half, so the shots became more plentiful. After NSU got one in the 50th minute, UMC finally got some shots off, from Aleisha Cotrez and Anna Kuecker, but both were saved by Ilee Neemeyer. Then, at 58:05, Cortez hit the crossbar, marking that as the closest and best opportunity for the Golden Eagles to strike. This led to momentum shifting in the Wolves’ favor, and they got two shots on goal in a minute, but King saved them both. Those two saves were the first 2 of 6 that Payton King made. She was a brick wall in net, including stopping a breakaway in the final minute, preserving the scoreless tie, which would end up being the final score.
Both teams are now 1-6-2, with Northern State 1-3-2 in the conference and UMC 0-5-1 in the conference.
