Polk County Commissioners set District 5 Special Election date after resignation and death of Mark Holy

The Polk County Commissioners met on Tuesday at the Polk Government Center. They started the meeting by honoring former District 5 Commissioner Mark Holy, who passed away on October 31 after a battle with ALS.

The commissioners set the special election date for April 14, 2026.
The filing period for people interested in running for election in District 5 will be from November 18-24 at the Polk County Government Center in the Taxpayer Service Center. The filing must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 24.
If there are more than two candidates, a primary election will be held on February 10.
The special election will be on
April 14.
Absentee voting will start on December 26, 2025.

Sam Melbye of Polk County Property Records and head of elections said the polling places will be determined now that they have an election date, and those wanting to file need to obtain the candidate packets at the Polk County Government Center in Crookston. “Those packets for filings can be picked up here at the Polk County Government Center in the Taxpayer Service Center. And then they need to be filed with us as well. There’s a $50 filing fee to file for that office,” said Melbye. “Absentee voting will start the day after Christmas, December 26, 2025. That ends up being 46 days before the election.”
