American Crystal Sugar is proud to award the Climax Shelly Independent School District a check for $5,000. The Climax Shelly Independent School District is located in Climax, MN, and serves students from Polk and Norman counties. Climax-Shelly is a Pre-k through 12th grade school with an enrollment of 152 this year.
As a school they have a firm commitment to the agriculture program with every student enrolled in an agriculture class in 6th through 9th grades with various specialized courses available for our 10-12 grade students.
The mission at Climax Shelly is to prepare the students for the challenges of tomorrow. That means preparing students for their future, whether it is in enrolling in higher education, enlisting in the military, or employment straight out of school. The goal is to have the students prepared to make that next step. The funding will support the purchase of a Flex-Farm indoor hydroponics system, which will be utilized as part of the plant science program and contribute to a student-led Supervised Agriculture Experience (SAE) community service program.
The SAE community service program is based around the students growing food through a school-sponsored garden and our ag program to provide fresh produce to our local food shelves. This particular system can grow nearly 400 lbs of greens to support the program on a yearly basis.
Climax Shelly Independent School District feels the best learning environment is to learn by doing. “In Northern Minnesota, we sometimes have to think outside the box when it comes to learning how to grow produce in the heart of a MN winter. This will give us a tool to accomplish just that while getting our kids interested in how things happen!”
