EGF Firefighters respond to New Year’s Eve residential fire

Late New Year’s Eve a residential structure fire was reported by neighbors at 920 2 nd Ave. NE. The fire, which was reported at 11:07 PM was quickly brought under control and the damage was contained to the single-family dwelling. The single occupant of the residence was not home at the time the fire was reported. No injuries were reported, three dogs were rescued and returned to the owner.

Firefighters remained on scene for several hours attempting to extinguish hotspots in the crawl space of the residence. The fire displaced one occupant, who is staying with family. Due to heavy smoke and fire damage the home is considered a total loss. A total of three (3) fire apparatus and twenty-one (21) fire personnel responded to the scene. The fire department was assisted on scene by the East Grand Forks Police Dept. and Altru ambulance.

The fire is undetermined but unintentional, originating in the basement near the furnace.

The East Grand Forks Fire Department would like to remind our citizens of the following fire safety tips:
• Test smoke alarms monthly and replace the batteries at least once a year.
• Create and practice a home fire escape plan with all family members.
• Have your furnace service annually by a qualified technician.
