This Saturday, May 17, the Crookston Fire Department will hold its Annual Open House from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This fun event is open to all residents of Crookston and the surrounding area. Firefighter Brian Hanson gave us an idea of some of the things that will be happening at the station on Saturday.
“Starting at 10:00 a.m., the Fire Station is going to be open to the general public. We went to all the schools and invited all the kids from K-6 to come down. Not that all aren’t welcome, if you are a senior in high school, you are still welcome,” says Hanson. “We will be doing bucket rides with our ladder truck, which is always a hit with the younger kids. We will also have station tours to show people what goes on down at the fire station on a day-to-day basis.”
There is always a lot of great information offered at the open house, including information on car seat safety, smoke detectors, and carbon monoxide detection. There are a few demonstrations, including a thermal imaging demonstration, as well as fire extinguisher training. “We are going to have a couple of firefighters showing people how to use a fire extinguisher this year,” says Hanson. “We don’t provide the fire extinguishers for homeowners, but at the same time, if they were to go out and buy a fire extinguisher for their own use, we will explain how to use it safely.”
Kids always enjoy trying on fire gear while at the open house and meeting Sparky and Marshall, the Fire Dogs. Dress the kids appropriately as the forecast for Saturday is cooler than it has been this week, and they will want to be outdoors for a few of the activities. “We will be doing our obstacle course again this year, which gives them a chance to burn off some energy. The grass might be wet if we get rain, but at the same time, it should be a nice day,” says Hanson. “At the end of that obstacle course, the kids get to spray a fire hose, which is always fun for them.”
There will be refreshments, door prizes to sign up for, and an opportunity to sign up for a FREE in-home Fire Safety Inspection. The kids will benefit greatly from meeting the firefighters and learning about what they do in and for the community.
